Accreditation Statement
The Institute for Functional Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
Statement of Need
The Institute for Functional Medicine, in response to educational needs expressed by physicians and other heathcare practitioners, has created the Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP) educational activity. AFMCP addresses practitioner needs by focusing on the development of knowledge and skill in healthcare delivery by integrating the science-based best practices of established and emerging care into an effective and cost-efficient approach to treatment that can be taught to practitioners and delivered to patients. AFMCP teaches the principles, processes, and clinical applications of functional medicine with the use of case studies that provide a model for personalized approaches to health care. Participating healthcare providers will learn how to apply functional medicine assessment tools to more fully evaluate patients’ health status as well as construct effective clinical interventions to enhance outcomes.
Who Should Attend?
Physicians and other allied healthcare professionals who wish to learn, or deepen their knowledge of, the principles and applications of functional medicine and clinical nutrition/applied biochemistry, including: MDs, DOs, PAs, NDs, DCs, RDs, RPhs, PhDs, LAcs, DDSs, and RNs.
Credit Designation
For MDs and DOs: The Institute for Functional Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 40.25 Category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the activity.

For NDs: 40.25 CEUs are available for Oregon. Contact the individual state licensing boards in other states.

For DCs: The National University of Health Sciences provides continuing education credit for chiropractic physicians. Applications have been submitted to all states for 40.25 credit hours.

For PAs: AAPA accepts AMA Category 1 credit for the PRA from organizations accredited by ACCME.

For Nurses: This ACCME-approved course may fulfill RN CE requirements. Contact your individual state licensing board for approved hours for your state.

For LAcs: The California Acupuncture Board approves CE credit activity for acupuncturists licensed in the State of California. 40.25 hours of CE credit are pending for this activity.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice, participants should be able to:
  1. Outline the scientific basis for functional medicine principles and fundamental clinical imbalances.
  2. Apply the principles of functional medicine:
    • Biochemical individuality associated with genetic and environmental uniqueness;
    • Patient-centered versus disease-centered;
    • Dynamic balance of internal and external factors; and
    • Web-like interconnections of physiological factors.
  3. Apply key elements of the functional medicine matrix in clinical practice:
    • Environmental inputs (diet, nutrition, exercise, trauma);
    • Immune and inflammatory imbalance;
    • Oxidative stress and energy production;
    • GI imbalance
    • Impaired detoxification and biotransformation;
    • Structural imbalance; and
    • Hormonal and neurotransmitter imbalance.
  4. Integrate appropriate assessment tools to diagnose, treat, and assess patient outcomes from a functional medicine perspective.
  5. Design nutritional and lifestyle interventions to improve patient outcomes.
