KRISTI HUGHES, ND founded the Center of Natural Healing Arts over a decade ago with a vision of providing integrated healthcare solutions for the public, as well as healthcare providers both locally in Minnesota and internationally. Dr. Hughes attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth and then graduated from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon, in 1997. While in medical school, she worked at the Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain Clinic, learning advanced strategies for managing chronic pain naturally, and she studied under Dr. Carolyn McMakin, specializing in the use of frequency specific microcurrent. Dr. Hughes became an Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice graduate in 2000, and she is an active member of The Institute for Functional Medicine. Dr. Hughes manages an integrated team of healthcare providers at her three clinic locations, which include personal trainers, massage therapists, and lifestyle coaches who participate both clinically and within the local communities. In 2008, Dr. Hughes cofounded the Foundation Wellness Program where she developed a natural healthcare wellness program customized for organizations and corporations; she now holds the role of Chief Knowledge Officer. The program offers on-site laboratory screening events with body composition assessments, coupled with a six-month educational series of lifestyle-transforming Webinars, group presentations, and personalized coaching.

DAVID S. JONES, MD is the President of The Institute for Functional Medicine. He has practiced as a family physician with emphasis in functional and integrative medicine for over 25 years. He is a recognized expert in the areas of nutrition, lifestyle changes for optimal health, and managed care, as well as the daily professional functions consistent with the modern specialty of Family Practice. Dr. Jones is the recipient of the 1997 Linus Pauling Award in Functional Medicine. He is the immediate Past President of PrimeCare, the Independent Physician Association of Southern Oregon (IPASO), where he served for seven years representing the majority of physicians in the Southern Oregon area.

DANIEL LUKACZER, ND received his undergraduate degree from Duke University and his doctorate in naturopathic medicine from Bastyr University in 1991. He is past Director of Clinical Research at Metagenics’ Functional Medicine Research Center where he was the principal investigator on various clinical trials. Dr. Lukaczer has taught, lectured and written extensively on botanical and nutritional medicine. He is currently in private practice in Fife, Washington, and Associate Director of Medical Education at the Institute for Functional Medicine.

JEFFREY S. BLAND, PHD has had a distinguished career in nutritional biochemistry that has earned him international acclaim as educator, research professor, leader in the natural products industry, recognized expert in human nutrition and functional medicine, and visionary for the future of health care. Dr. Bland now serves as Chief Science Officer of Metagenics, Inc. He co-founded The Institute for Functional Medicine with his wife, Susan Bland.

KENNETH A. BOCK, MD received his medical degree with honors from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1979. He is board certified in family medicine and a clinical instructor in the Department of Family Medicine at Albany Medical College. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice and the American College of Nutrition. He is the immediate past president of the American College for Advancement in Medicine. For more than 25 years, he has dealt with complex medical problems by integrating alternative modalities with conventional medicine into a comprehensive integrative medical practice, and for the past decade, he has focused that approach on children with autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, asthma, and allergies. Dr. Bock’s Healing Program is at the vanguard of the new biomedical approach to the treatment of children affected by these disorders.

He is the coauthor of four books: The Road to Immunity (Pocket Books), Natural Relief for Your Child’s Asthma (Harper Collins), The Germ Survival Guide (McGraw Hill), and Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Asthma and Allergies (Random House). He lectures nationally and internationally on immune system health and integrative approaches to autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, asthma ,and allergies.

ELIZABETH BOHAM, MD, MS, RD is board certified in family medicine, with a strong background in nutrition and Functional Medicine. She graduated with a B.S. in nutritional biochemistry from Cornell University and an M.S. in nutrition education and exercise physiology from Columbia University. She is also a Registered Dietitian who practiced nutrition in New York City before going to medical school. She completed her medical school training and residency in family medicine at Albany Medical College. Before joining Dr Mark Hyman at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA, she worked as an integrative physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, and was a partner with Albany Clinical Nutrition Specialists. She speaks on topics ranging from women’s health and breast cancer prevention to insulin resistance and heart health. She has been the online expert for Self magazine and has contributed articles to a variety of magazines and books. She is married and has 2 children, Ama and Tismark. Through her practice and lecturing, Dr. Boham has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness.

MARGARET CHRISTENSEN, MD practices at the Christensen Center for Whole Life Health, an outpatient gynecologic practice utilizing the functional medicine model along with integrative and holistic approaches to healing, focused on hormonal balancing and creating women’s health and wellness. She obtained her MD at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and is a Fellow, American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Christensen is a frequent lecturer at national conferences on multiple topics related to holistic approaches to women’s health and wellness.

MONIQUE CLASS MS, CS, APRN is a certified Family Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Holistic Health, and wellness educator at The Center for Women's Health in Stamford, CT, where she inspires and supports patients of all ages to implement lifestyle changes to improve their health and well-being. Her special interests include well-woman care, adolescent gynecology, and optimal aging.

A sought-after teacher in the fields of holistic health and nursing, Monique is an adjunct professor at the College of New Rochelle Graduate School of Nursing, a clinical instructor for Yale Graduate School of Nursing, a senior faculty member of the Center for Mind/Body Medicine in Washington, D.C., and a faculty member for the Institute for Functional Medicine.

Monique has extensive training and clinical experience in many therapeutic approaches including nutrition and mind-body therapies. She is also certified in imagery by the Psychosynthesis Institute and is currently completing her training in foundations in herbal medicine. She received her degree as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and her post-masters as a Family Nurse Practitioner from the College of New Rochelle and her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from the University of Virginia.

JOHN CLINE, MD is a medical doctor who utilizes an integrative approach in his practice. He obtained a BSc in Biochemistry, followed by his MD and residency training in family medicine at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Dr. Cline has a particular interest in using various detoxification strategies and has taken extra training through the American Board of Chelation Therapy and the American Academy of Neural Therapy. He is Medical Director of the Cline Medical Centre in Nanaimo, located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. He is also Medical Director for the Oceanside Functional Medicine Research Institute and has collaborated with Michael Lyon, MD, on several research projects related to ADHD.

RUTH DEBUSK, PhD, RD has a long-standing interest in nutritional genomics and Functional Medicine. Trained originally as a food and nutrition professional and then as a geneticist and molecular biologist, Dr. DeBusk was a member of the genetics faculty at Florida State University for several years. Her research interests combined nutrition and genetics, focusing on genetic regulation of nutrient absorption in response to environmental signals. In 1985 she, her husband, and a number of graduate students co-founded a biotechnology company to develop genetic diagnostic assays for the food industry. She went on to form a second company that used DNA profiling for identifying individuals. These experiences provided the foundation for establishing her clinical practice in the early stages of the integration of genetics into healthcare. She has a wide variety of clinical experience, including several years’ association with a group of gastroenterologists whose clinic focuses on digestive disorders. Her role has ranged from genetic counseling, to gastroenterology-related nutrition therapy, to gene-based nutritional interventions as that technology has now begun to be introduced into practice.

In addition to her practical experience in science, business, and clinical practice, Dr. DeBusk has served on local, state, national, and international committees and advisory boards related to nutrition, genetics, and biotechnology. As a university professor she authored numerous research papers in genetics and nutrition. She has written four books, including the American Dietetic Association’s Genetics: The Nutrition Connection, and one for those new to nutrigenomics: “It’s Not Just Your Genes!” in collaboration with Yael Joffe, RD. Dr. DeBusk has been honored with various awards through the years, including the Florida Dietetic Association’s 2009 Outstanding Dietitian and 2001 Emerging Leader Award, Tallahassee Dietetic Association’s 2008 and 2009 Outstanding Dietitian awards, and the first Excellence in Practice Award conferred by the American Dietetic Association’s Nutrition in Complementary Care practice group (2003). In 2007 she was honored with the Harold Harper Award for Science and Practice by the American College for Advancement in Medicine. Dr. DeBusk frequently presents lectures and workshops to health care professionals and is currently adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey where she teaches a graduate level course in nutritional genomics.

JEANNE DRISKO, MD is the Riordan Professor of Orthomolecular Medicine and Director of the Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Dr. Drisko conducts integrative medicine research at the university, including trials investigating the efficacy and safety of intravenous ascorbate in cancer, bioidentical “natural” hormones, and chelation therapy in cardiovascular disease. She was awarded the 2006 K-INBRE research award at the medical center. Dr. Drisko teaches a fourth-year medical student elective in integrative medicine, along with other teaching duties with first- and second-year students, nursing students, and practicing physicians. A fellowship program in integrative medicine for primary care physicians began in 2008 under Dr. Drisko’s leadership. She was nominated by the University of Kansas Medical Student Assembly to receive the Rainbow Award for Excellence in Teaching the Art of Medicine.

Dr. Drisko serves the University of Kansas School of Medicine by sitting on multiple committees, provides guidance for the State of Kansas on topics in integrative medicine, and participates at the national level on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) initiatives. She is a member of the Kansas Cancer Research Institute and an advisory board member of the General Clinical Research Center at the university. She served on an Institute of Medicine committee, and the resulting report on CAM was published in 2005. The Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center is a member of the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine, a prestigious group of top academic CAM programs, for which Dr. Drisko serves on the steering committee. Dr. Drisko has been an advisor to the National Education Dialogue for CAM therapies, and she served on an expert panel for CAM therapy integration by the RAND Corporation. She is president of the American College for Advancement in Medicine, the oldest CAM physician member organization.

JOEL M. EVANS, MD is the Founder and Director of The Center for Women’s Health, an Assistant Clinical Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and a member of the core faculty of both The Center for Mind/Body Medicine and the Institute for Functional Medicine. He is a nationally recognized wellness expert, educator, author and physician, specializing in nutrition, functional medicine, mind/body medicine and spirituality.

Having pursued studies in spirituality, metaphysics, and personal transformation for many years, Dr. Evans has recently created a core curriculum designed to share ancient spiritual wisdom with others in order to help bring health and happiness into their lives.

PATRICK HANAWAY, MD is a board-certified family physician with a Medical Degree from Washington University and residency training at the University of New Mexico.

Dr. Hanaway received his Bachelors degree from the University of Wisconsin in Molecular Biology and has done research in muscle biology, neurochemistry, lipid metabolism, public health, preventive medicine, immunology, digestion, and nutrition.

In addition to being a family physician, Dr. Hanaway is a board-certified integrative holistic physician and currently is the President of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine.

Dr. Hanaway co-founded ‘Family to Family: Your Home for Whole Family Health’ with his wife Lisa in Asheville, NC, and is currently Chief Medical Officer for Genova Diagnostics.

Dr. Hanaway has lectured extensively on the clinical application of nutrition and digestion; particularly in the areas of immunology, oxidative stress, inflammation, and achieving long-term wellness.

BETHANY HAYS, MD, FACOG is a practicing obstetrician gynecologist with a career-long passion to find the best possible forms of healing and to incorporate them into her practice. Ten years ago that dream came to a new level of realization in the opening of True North, a center for health and healing in Falmouth, Maine. This unique integrative practice has been created by a group of practitioners of conventional and complementary modalities after nearly four years of dreaming and planning. Using circle process, a non-hierarchical business and collaboration model, and the belief in the importance of reverent participatory relationships, True North is a model for health care in a changing environment. The addition of functional medicine to her practice added a new dimension and new excitement for Dr. Hays, as well as a passion for the biochemistry she tried so hard to forget after the first year of medical school. She now claims to actually know the steroid pathway! There are currently seven AFMCP graduates practicing at True North making it Maine’s center for Functional Medicine!

ROBERT J. HEDAYA, MD DFAPA has been practicing psychiatric medicine since 1979, and has been actively involved in the Functional Medicine community since 1996. He is the founder of the National Center for Whole Psychiatry in Chevy Chase , Maryland , as well as the New York Center for Whole Psychiatry in Manhattan. He is the founder and President of American Health Educators, Inc. (1991), an organization dedicated to expanding the professional horizons of health care practitioners to encompass the Functional Medicine and Whole Psychiatry models. He is an active member of the Endocrine Society, a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a former Board Member of the Suburban Maryland Psychiatric Society, and board certified by the American Boards of Psychiatry and Neurology, Adolescent Psychiatry, and Clinical Psychopharmacology. Dr. Hedaya has been a consultant to the National Institutes for Mental Health, and is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical Center , where he teaches courses on psychoendocrinology, affective disorders and cognitive behavioral therapy. He has received the "Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award"on three occasions from Georgetown University Medical Center. He is the author of three books: Depression: Advancing the Treatment Paradigm (2008, IFM.ORG), and the Antidepressant Survival Program (2000, Crown) and Understanding Biological Psychiatry (1996, Norton). He has been featured in the local and national media (20/20, 60 minutes, New York Times, Washington Post etc.) on multiple occassions and is a frequent nationally and internationally recognized speaker. He has an active blog on WholePsychiatry.com as well as psychologytoday.com.

MARK HYMAN, MD is a family physician, a four-time New York Times bestselling author, and an internationally recognized leader in functional medicine. Dr. Hyman is Chairman of the Institute for Functional Medicine, and was awarded its 2009 Linus Pauling Award for Leadership in Functional Medicine. He is the founder and Medical Director of The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, Massachusetts, where he directs a team of physicians, nutritionists and nurses who utilize a comprehensive approach to health. He formerly served as co-Medical Director at Canyon Ranch Lenox, one of the world's leading health resorts. He is on the Board of Directors of The Center for Mind-Body Medicine, and a faculty member of its Food As Medicine training program. He is also on the Board of Advisors of Dr. Memhet Oz’s HealthCorps, which tackles the obesity epidemic by “educating the student body” in American high schools about nutrition, fitness, and mental resilience. He is a volunteer for Partners in Health, with whom he worked immediately after the earthquake in Haiti, and he continues to help rebuild the Haitian health care system.

Dr. Hyman has testified before the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and has consulted with the Surgeon General on diabetes prevention. He has testified before the Senate Working Group on Health Care Reform on Functional Medicine, and participated in the White House Forum on Prevention and Wellness in June 2009. With Drs. Dean Ornish and Michael Roizen, Dr. Hyman crafted and helped to introduce the Take Back Your Health Act of 2009 into the United States Senate, to provide for reimbursement of lifestyle treatment of chronic disease. He continues to work in Washington on health reform, recently testifying before a Congressional hearing on Functional Medicine, nutrition and the use of dietary supplements. Through his work with corporations and government entities, such as CIGNA and the Veterans Administration, he is helping to improve health outcomes and reduce costs around the world. In recognition of his efforts, he was recently awarded The Council on Litigation Management’s 2010 Professionalism Award, citing individuals who have demonstrated leadership by example in the highest standard of their profession. He also received The American College of Nutrition 2009 Communication and Media Award for his contribution to promoting better understanding of nutrition science. He has been featured in recent months on 60 Minutes, Larry King Live, CNN, and MSNBC.

JOSEPH J. LAMB, MD is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Holistic Medicine. Until May 2000, he was President of The Integrative Medicine Works in Alexandria, Virginia. He now works for Metagenics. Dr. Lamb works in partnership with his patients to create optimal health and well-being by using functional medical approaches including lifestyle modification, herbal and nutritional therapies, and cognitive therapy approaches. Dr. Lamb completed his graduate education at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond and his residency at Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at George Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Lamb, a native Alexandrian, was active in his community until moving to Gig Harbor, WA. He is the Past President of the St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes Alumni Association. He is the President of the Commonwealth Consultants Foundation, a local charity chartered to provide unique educational and social experiences for economically deserving children and young adults.

LIZ LIPSKI, CCN, CHN, is board certified in Clinical Nutrition & Holistic Nutrition, the author of Digestive Wellness 3rd edition (McGraw Hill 2004), Digestive Wellness for Children (Basic Health 2006), and Leaky Gut Syndrome (Keats 1998). She’s the Director of Doctoral Studies at Hawthorn University. Dr. Lipski on the nutrition advisory board for the Institute for Functional Medicine, and a special advisor to the Board of Directors for the National Association of Nutrition Professionals. GERARD E. MULLIN, MD, MS, CNSP, graduated from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School in 1985 as a member of the Alpha-Omega-Alpha honor society. He completed his training in internal medicine at the Mount Sinai Hospital in 1988 where his research in AIDS and immunology merited several publications and several research awards including the American College of Physicians. Dr. Mullin then moved to Baltimore, Maryland to train in the field of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at the Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1988-1991. He concomitantly performed basic research at the National Institutes of Health from 1989-1991. His area of interest was the immunological pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease. In 1991 he joined the faculty at North Shore University-Cornell University College of Medicine. His area of interest expanded to nutrition and in 1994 he earned a Masters of Science in nutrition at the University of Bridgeport and mentored under Dr. Shari Lieberman, a CAM specialist. At North Shore, Dr. Mullin was promoted to; program director of Gastroenterology in 1998, Director of Nutrition Support in 2000 and Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology in 2002 and Associate Professor of Medicine in 2003. Dr. Mullin has become an authority in functional gastroenterology and has lectured nationally and internationally on this subject. He is boarded in Gastroenterology and is separately boarded by two different nutrition societies (American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition-ASPEN, American Board of Physician Nutrition Specialist-ABPNS). Dr. Mullin has also served as President of one of the countries larges chapters of ASPEN’s nutrition society (LISPEN) in 2003-4. He is nationally recognized for his expertise in gastrointestinal nutrition and will be chairing a session on Probiotics and delivering a state of the art lecture on CAM in Gastroenterology at ASPEN’s annual meeting in January, 2007. He is the Director of Nutrition Services and Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) for the Division of Gastroenterology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Mullin has made many novel discoveries and was awarded the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation’s young investigator of the year in 1991 and again in 1993. Marquis has recognized him in; Who's Who in US Health and Medical Services, 1990, Marquis Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, 1993, 2003, 2004, Marquis Who’s Who in the World, 1994, 1996, Marquis Who’s Who in America, 1996, 2005, 2006, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, 1998. In 1998 he was recognized for his accomplishments by his undergraduate university and was awarded the William Paterson University Distinguished Alumni Award. His peers have recognized him as a clinician by being listed in America’s Registry of Outstanding Professionals in 2003, Long Island Magazines Top Doctors (2003-4) and Consumer’s Research Council of America, “America’s Top Physicians” (2004-5, 2005-6).

DAVID MUSNICK, MD is board certified in internal medicine and sports medicine with 21 years of clinical experience. His practice, located in Bellevue, WA, focuses on orthopedic and sports medicine, pain management, and functional internal medicine. Dr. Musnick is an expert in exercise prescription, pain management, Frequency Specific Microcurrent, and Regenerative Injection Therapy and he is the author of a book on functional exercise: Conditioning for Outdoor Fitness: Functional Exercise and Nutrition for Every Body. He teaches on the topics of structure, pain management, and exercise prescription at AFMCP and also conducts seminars on exercise prescription, orthopedic medicine, nutrition, and pain management. Dr. Musnick is on the faculty at the University of Washington, Department of Sports Medicine, Orthopedics and Rehabilitation and is the Instructor of Sports Medicine and Therapeutic Exercise at Bastyr University. He is a member of IFM’s Curriculum Advisory Committee.

THOMAS O’BRYAN, DC, CCN, DACBN is a graduate of the University of Michigan and the National College of Chiropractic. He is a Diplomate of the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners, a Diplomate of the Clinical Nutrition Board of the American Chiropractic Association, and a Certified Clinical Nutritionist with the International & American Associations of Clinical Nutritionists. He is a Certified Applied Kinesiologist as well as a Certified Practitioner in Functional Biomechanics from the Motion Palpation Institute. He is a member of the Institute for Functional Medicine, the International & American Associations of Clinical Nutritionists, the American Chiropractic Association, the International Academy of Preventive Medicine, and numerous other professional organizations. Dr. O’Bryan is a practicing graduate of the Institute for Functional Medicine’s hallmark program Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP). Using the tools of applied kinesiology, laboratory, and functional medicine, Dr. O’Bryan assists patients in reclaiming their health with an emphasis on diet and nutrition. This provides a motivating and successful game plan for patients who previously suffered from debilitating symptoms, high risk for disease, and frustrating medical problems. Dr. O’Bryan has been a Visiting Instructor at Northeastern Illinois University, where he taught “Applied Nutrition for Health and Performance.” He is a Visiting Instructor at the National University of Life Sciences. He is the Vice President of the Illinois Chapter of the International & American Associations of Clinical Nutritionists. He is listed in Who’s Who in International Medicine and the International Directory of Distinguished Leadership for Excellence in Education. He is a triathlete and a second-degree black belt in Aikido. Awarded Chiropractor of The Year (1988) in Chicago, Dr. O’Bryan is the past President of the Chicago Chiropractic Society and a past Director of the Illinois Chiropractic Society.

RICHARD PANICO, MD did his undergraduate work in zoology at the University of Nevada, where he had a scholarship on the varsity gymnastic team. He attended Emory University School of Medicine and completed a residency in psychiatry at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Panico was Medical Director of Advantage Behavioral Health Systems and Division Chief of psychiatry at Athens Regional Medical Center for many years. Currently, he is the Founder and Medical Director of The Athens Regional Mind Body Institute. In 1971, Dr. Panico began the practice of Hatha yoga and meditation. In 1990, he began the study of classical yoga and its application to healing. Based on this work, Dr. Panico began the Athens Regional Mind Body Institute in the summer of 2000. The Mind Body Institute has grown exponentially, currently providing services for 1,000 patients a month. Dr. Panico also began research programs in collaboration with the University of Georgia Clinical Psychology Department in 2002. This research is expanding to involve multiple researchers at the University of Georgia and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center training programs for healthcare providers and physicians. Dr. Panico teaches mind body medicine at Emory University School of Medicine, University of Florida College of Medicine, and the Medical College of Georgia. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of psychiatry and behavioral medicine at Medical College of Georgia and principal trainer and teacher for Integral Yoga; he also trains teachers for Sivananda Yoga.

DAVID PERLMUTTER, MD, FACN is a Board-Certified Neurologist and Fellow of the American College of Nutrition who received his M.D. degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine where he was awarded the Leonard G. Rowntree Research Award. After completing residency training in Neurology, also at the University of Miami, Dr. Perlmutter entered private practice in Naples, Florida where he serves as Medical Director of the Perlmutter Health Center and the Perlmutter Hyperbaric Center.

Dr. Perlmutter received the Linus Pauling Award in 2002 from the Institute for Functional Medicine in Gig Harbor, Washington. He is recognized internationally as a leader in the field of nutritional influences in neurological disorders.

ROBERT ROUNTREE, MD received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill in 1980. He subsequently completed a three-year residency in family and community medicine at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania, after which he was certified by the American Board of Family Practice. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Holistic Medicine. He has augmented his training with extensive postgraduate studies in nutritional and herbal pharmacology along with certification as a master practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Dr. Rountree has been providing his unique combination of traditional family medicine, nutrition, herbology, and mind-body therapy in Boulder, Colorado, since 1983. He has recently opened Boulder Wellcare, a private practice specializing in individual healthcare consulting. He is coauthor of three books on Integrative Medicine, Immunotics: A Revolutionary Way to Fight Infection, Beat Chronic Illness and Stay Well (Putnam, 2000), Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child (Avery Publishing, 1994) and A Parent's Guide to Medical Emergencies (Avery, 1997).

ALICIA STANTON, MD graduated magna cum laude from the State University of NY at Buffalo School of Medicine in 1990. She became Board Certified in Ob/Gyn in 1996 and was in Ob/Gyn private practice from 1994-2005. She is Board Certified in Anti-Aging Medicine in 2004 and became an Advanced Fellow in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine in 2008. Her practice transitioned from Ob/Gyn to functional medicine in 2005. Dr. Stanton released her book, Hormone Harmony, in October, 2009. She speaks internationally to physicians, health care providers and lay people about the relationships between diet, stress, toxin exposure and hormone levels. She served as the Chief Medical Officer for BodyLogicMD from 2007 until May, 2010 and maintains a private practice in functional medicine in Hartford, CT.

P. MICHAEL STONE, MD, MS is a board certified family physician who practices in Ashland, Oregon with Leslie Stone, MD, and David Jones, MD. Their functional medicine practice is thriving. He has experience in rural and frontier family medicine, emergency medicine, and as a hospitalist. His undergraduate and graduate degrees are in human nutrition. He graduated from University of Washington, and did his Residency training in family practice at UCLA-Ventura, where he was chief resident and also completed a teaching fellowship in Family Medicine. He has been on adjunct faculty at UCLA and University of Washington for primary care students in the Doctoring and RUOP programs. His career has offered him medical experiences and practice in Thailand, Alaska, Eastern Sierras, Idaho, and Oregon. His interests and lectures have covered a wide range of topics...bezoars to neonatal hypocalcemia, health issues with depleted uranium, exposure to Vitamin D and chronic disease, and many subjects in between.

THOMAS SULT, MD completed his undergraduate education in chemistry at California State Univ., Chico. While spending 2 years at St. Georges School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies, he was introduced to the herbal and shamanistic customs of the Grenadian “bush doctor.” Upon transfer to UCLA School of Medicine, Dr. Sult was introduced to Norman Cousins and the division of Psychoneuroimmunology. Mr. Cousins became a close mentor to Dr. Sult and helped him form a scientific foundation for the broad, open “natural” healing techniques he had witnessed in Grenada. Dr. Sult maintains a private practice in St. Cloud, MN and is board certified in family medicine and holistic medicine. He is Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of Minnesota and is the Medical Director of “A Chance to Grow,” a multidisciplinary rehabilitation clinic for brain-injured children in Minneapolis.

MARY WILLIS, RD, LD, CDE is currently the Nutrition Services Director for College Park Family Care Center, a successful independent practice of Family Physicians in Overland Park, Kansas. The Center currently has over 70 providers on staff in seven locations serving a patient base of approximately 100,000+ patients per year in the southern Johnson County area. In her position, Mary is responsible for patient counseling; teaching and overseeing weekly classes on health and wellness; directing nutritional supplement selection/sales in a multi-facility practice; and directing and educating a department of dietitians. Her main areas of expertise are incorporating Functional Nutrition into diabetes education as a Certified Diabetes Educator; heart disease prevention using basic and expanded lipid profiling; gastro-intestinal restoration using elimination diets; and weight management using insulin balancing meal plans and supplements. For the past 7-8 years, Mary has had the privilege of co-directing a subspecialty Functional Medicine clinic that has been a part of College Park Family Care Center for 11 years. This clinic offers a multidisciplinary approach using a medical doctor, nutritionist (RD), and physical therapist to address the needs of the chronic patient in the areas of fatigue, irritable bowel, and fibromyalgia with a complementary and functional approach. Mary considers this clinic the favorite part of her job each week and it has been her most challenging position in the 23+ years that she has worked for College Park Family Care Center. 2010 marks the second year of an Employee Wellness Program that Mary has helped develop with the help of a Wellness Team including a physical therapist, physician and administrative assistant. This Employee Wellness Program serves the now 450+ employees at College Park Family Care Center.

Mary has been happily married for the past 24 years and is the proud mother of four almost grown sons. Mary enjoys the outdoors, gardening, Labrador retrievers, exercise, cooking with whole (real) foods, and encouraging others to walk in health and wholeness.

CATHERINE WILLNER, MD is a practicing neurologist in Durango, Colorado and recipient of the 2005 Linus Pauling Award for leadership in Functional Medicine. She received her formal training in Neurology at the Mayo Clinic including subspecialty training in Autonomic, Peripheral Neurology as well as Pain Management. She remained on staff at the Mayo Clinic until 1997, at which time she relocated her practice to Colorado to focus on functional neurology. She is board certified in Neurology and in Pain Management. Prior to pursuing the MD degree, Doctor Willner was enrolled briefly in the National College of Naturopathic Medicine when the program was still in Kansas. Her interest in biochemical individuality, nutritional biochemistry and functional medicine, though somewhat on hold during the Mayo years, is currently thriving in Durango.

DEBORAH R. BERNSTEIN, MD is board certified in both Physical Medicine and Holistic Medicine.  She graduated from Douglass College, Rutgers University with a BA in Human Communication and Minor in Psychology, and then studied for her Masters in Bio-Nutrition at University of Bridgeport, where she also took graduate courses in Psychology and Exercise Physiology. After graduating from medical school at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, she completed a general medicine internship and specialized in physical medicine and rehabilitation. She created The Holistic Healing Center in Lahaska, PA, where she has been providing holistic medical care to patients since 1999. She continues to take many additional courses, most of which are oriented towards nutrition, functional medicine, and holistic medicine.

SUSAN BLUM MD, MPH is the Founder and Director of the Center for Nutritional Medicine in White Plains, NY.  Her medical practice focuses on the integration of functional medicine, mind-body medicine, and nutrition. She is board certified in preventive medicine and did her internal medicine training at St-Lukes Roosevelt Hospital in New York City and her residency in Preventive Medicine at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. She received her Masters in Public Health from Columbia University, and her training in functional medicine from The Institute for Functional Medicine in 2001. 

In addition to her private practice, Dr. Blum is Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, works part-time as a Clinical Integrative Medicine Specialist at the Greenwich Hospital Center for Integrative Medicine in Greenwich, Connecticut, and is Senior Teaching Faculty at the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, DC.

KARA FITZGERALD, ND received her doctorate of naturopathic medicine from National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon. She completed the first CNME-accredited post-doctorate in nutritional biochemistry and laboratory medicine at Metametrix Clinical Laboratory and residency at Progressive Medical Center, a large, integrative medical practice in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Fitzgerald is a contributing author to Laboratory Evaluations for Integrative and Functional Medicine and the Institute for Functional Medicine’s 21st Century Medicine. She is currently writing a book of case studies in integrative medicine. Dr. Fitzgerald lectures widely on the clinical application of functional laboratory interpretation for several organizations, including Food as Medicine, Autism One, The Institute of Women’s Health and the Institute for Functional Medicine. She maintains a clinical practice at Advanced Diagnostic at Yale-New Haven on Long Wharf, in New Haven, Connecticut. 

RICHARD T. HANSEN, DMD, FACAD received his BS in biological sciences from USC in 1972 and his degree in dentistry from Washington University in St. Louis in 1976. After graduation, he received training in acupuncture, eastern medicine, nutrition and homeopathy as well as electromagnetic/energy functional medicine in Germany. He is a member of over 16 professional societies, authored several papers on lasers, high-tech dentistry and health, and has given many presentations nationally and internationally on advances in dental technology, cosmetic dentistry, lasers, and health. Along with attorney Ellen Brown he co-wrote the critically acclaimed book The Key to Ultimate Health. Dr. Hansen has been featured in many newspaper and magazine stories, was on the advisory board of Fitness and Health Magazine and is frequently consulted and quoted in many national magazine articles.

Dr. Hansen is a past faculty of UCLA’s School of Dentistry, Department of Fixed Prosthodontics, and has maintained a private practice in Fullerton, California for over 30 years, where he utilized the most advanced dental techniques and equipment. In addition to his private practice, he serves as director of The Advanced Health Research Institute, a nonprofit research and education organization.

JAMES D. LEIBER, DO is a board certified family medicine physician. He completed his undergraduate degrees at Boston University and his medical school training at Des Moines University, followed by an intensive three year post-graduate residency training program in family medicine at David Grant Medical Center/University of California, Davis, which he completed while also serving as an Air Force officer. Additionally, he has completed training in Medical Acupuncture (UCLA) and advanced osteopathic manipulation (manual medicine) and is board certified by the American Board of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (ABONMM) and has also been formally trained in nutritional and functional medicine. He has a strong interest in nutrition, and functional integrative medicine has been involved in fulfilling a national grant to incorporate these concepts into the traditional medical school curriculum. He is involved on a national level in health care reform in helping develop a new model for medical education and practice in the 21st century while also serving as a medical consultant in the development of wellness programs.

Dr. Leiber has served an attending Family Physician at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. and was privileged to also be the primary osteopathic physician in the White House for the President and Vice-President. He is currently Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Osteopathic Principles and Practice brought at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, Florida, where he is the co-course director for an Integrative Clinical Nutrition course for over 300 medical students. He also has an active part-time practice in Bradenton, Florida at Bradenton East Integrative Medicine where he partners with patients to identify the root causes and imbalances that underlie their symptoms, focusing on chronic medical problems, pain management, exercise rehabilitation, and age management.

DEANN LISKA, PHD is Director of Nutrition Science at The Kellogg Company, where she is responsible for research on the health benefits of products and product ingredients, as well as for review of the science, GRAS, NDI, and substantiations behind functional ingredients. Prior to working at Kellogg’s, Dr. Liska held management positions at Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc., an ingredient and consumer products goods company, and Metagenics, Inc. a dietary supplement company serving the professional healthcare market. Dr. Liska received her BS in chemistry from Portland State University in Oregon, and her PhD in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Dr. Liska has numerous publications on functional medicine and chronic health conditions as well as on biochemistry and nutrition. She is a past contributor to the Textbook of Functional Medicine and has also been a member of ILSI, IFIC, and GMA, where she serves on committees related to fortification, functional foods, and FDA regulatory requirements of nutritional products.

DAVID MUSNICK, MD is board certified in internal medicine and sports medicine with 21 years of clinical experience. His practice, located in Bellevue, WA, focuses on orthopedic and sports medicine, pain management, and functional internal medicine. Dr. Musnick is an expert in exercise prescription, pain management, Frequency Specific Microcurrent, and Regenerative Injection Therapy and he is the author of a book on functional exercise: Conditioning for Outdoor Fitness: Functional Exercise and Nutrition for Every Body. He teaches on the topics of structure, pain management, and exercise prescription at AFMCP and also conducts seminars on exercise prescription, orthopedic medicine, nutrition, and pain management. Dr. Musnick is on the faculty at the University of Washington, Department of Sports Medicine, Orthopedics and Rehabilitation and is the Instructor of Sports Medicine and Therapeutic Exercise at Bastyr University.  

COCO NEWTON, MPH, RD, CCN is a Registered Dietitian (RD), a Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CCN), and the owner of Lifetime Nutrition, LLC, a private practice in Plymouth, Michigan where she uses a functional medicine approach to treat patients with chronic illness. Early in her career, she was instrumental in the start-up of two nutrition support teams for critical care in hospitals, which is where her interest began in understanding the metabolic management of critically ill patients. This interest continues in her passion for functional medicine, and she supports continued education about this approach to nutrition through her educational presentations to nutrition professionals as well as to dietetics and nutrition students. She is a founding member of the Nutrition Advisory Board at the Institute for Functional Medicine, and serves as Vice-Chair, Michigan Board of Dietetics and Nutrition. 

MARION K. OWEN, MD completed a BS in Biology from Davidson College and received her MD from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1999. She worked as a primary care physician at Northside Urgent Care and Family Medicine in Alpharetta, GA until 2007 when she opened the Whole Family Medicine clinic in Decatur, GA, where she is the owner and sole physician.

KARYN M. SHANKS, MD is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and Founding Diplomat of the American Board of Holistic Medicine. She did her medical and residency training at the University of Chicago and the University of Iowa, respectively. Dr. Shanks is an active member and enthusiastic supporter of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been providing comprehensive health care to adults in the Eastern Iowa area since completing her residency in 1994. In 2001, she founded Kylemore Center for Medicine and Healing to offer a more comprehensive and person-oriented model of health care for her clients.
She practices comprehensive functional medicine and sees clients from all over the US.  Her areas of professional expertise include preventative health and wellness and the evaluation and treatment of chronic, complex illness.

DAVID J. WICKES, BS, DC completed his Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) and family practice residency at the National College of Chiropractic, Lombard, Illinois, and is board certified by the American Board of Chiropractic Internists. He has served as associate editor for several chiropractic and integrative medicine journals and has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed publications. He is a longtime member of the Institute for Functional Medicine and was a contributor to the Textbook of Functional Medicine.

He formerly served as Senior Vice President and Provost at the National University of Health Sciences (formerly The National College of Chiropractic) in Lombard, Illinois, where he was also full-time faculty from 1979-2003. He currently serves as Executive Vice President and Provost at Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Oregon, a chiropractic school that places great emphasis upon evidence-based practice and primary care.
